About
Dr. Dylan Gatner is a registered psychologist with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (#2648) with specialized training and competency in forensic psychology. He conducts forensic psychological evaluations, treatment and management, professional consultation, research, as well as supervision and training. Dr. Gatner seeks to work with attorneys, organizations, and third-party agencies in Metro Vancouver and throughout BC.
Dr. Gatner works in forensic and general clinical contexts, including in the title of Forensic Psychologist within the BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services at different forensic mental health outpatient clinics in Vancouver and across British Columbia. Specifically, he provides forensic treatment (e.g., therapy for mood, anxiety, personality disorder) and assessment services (e.g., violence risk assessment, diagnosis) to individuals with complex legal and mental health needs In particular, Dr. Gatner conducts forensic evaluations to Provincial and Supreme Courts of BC. Among his treatment and assessment services, his clinical specialty includes conducting independent violence risk assessments (see his Services for details).
Research Contributions
Dr. Gatner is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at Simon Fraser University. He applies a scientist-practitioner approach to all his professional work. Specifically, his clinical practice is informed by his active research in forensic psychological issues that broadly encompass forensic assessment and management. His research interests include psychopathic personality disorder (psychopathy) and violence risk assessment. Through these interests, Dr. Gatner has been a lead author in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals related to psychology and forensic mental health (e.g., Journal of Personality, Assessment, International Journal of Forensic Mental Health). Additionally, he has also presented at international conferences and has received grants and national funding for his scholarly work. Dr. Gatner also engages in ongoing scientific service work via editorial consultation for various peer-reviewed academic journals, including the Journal of Forensic Psychology Research and Practice, Criminal Justice and Behavior, and the Journal of Threat Assessment and Management.

Education and Training in Forensic Psychology
Dr. Gatner completed his clinical training and obtained his Ph.D. at Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) Clinical Psychology Program in Burnaby, BC, with specialized training in the Clinical Forensic Stream within SFU’s prestigious Law and Psychology Program. This involved specialized training in research (e.g., statistics, research methods) and clinical training in forensic and clinical psychology. Dr. Gatner’s one-year pre-doctoral clinical psychology residency was completed at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton with a specialized rotation in their Forensic Psychiatry Program.
